The Jidai Matsuri festival (Festival of the Ages) will happen October 22 in Kyoto.
The festivities include historical reanactments and a large scale parade. The day begins early and portable shrines (representing Japanese emperors Kanmu and Komei) are delivered to the Old Imperial Palace. Later, there’s a two-kilometer costume parade featuring around 2,000 performers. People dress in outfits from different historical periods such as the Meiji era.
