If you’re a serious film buff but haven’t already made your travel plans you’re probably too late for Sundance (January 19-29, in Park City, Utah) or Santa Barbara (January 26-February 5). So while it’s a stretch to say they’re the next best thing(s), cinematic options closer to home include two events in Thailand, both in seaside towns: the brand new Hua Hin International Film Festival (January 26-29) and the green-minded Phangan Film Festival (February 26-26).
No A-list celebrities or world premiers, but you’ll save a bundle on airfare and accommodation – better food and beaches, too. Jetstar flies thrice daily to Bangkok from S$229 and Silkair flies to Koh Samui five times weekly from S$468.
