Recently The New York Times published its intriguing list of 52 Places to Go in 2014, a pick of top travel spots from around the world, highlighting both well-traveled destinations, such as Perth in Australia, to offbeat locations like the Albanian coast.
Cities that have been reinventing themselves in recent years, like South Africa’s Cape Town and post-earthquake Queenstown New Zealand, are featured alongside destinations that will be big in this year’s event calendar, including Scotland where the 2014 Common Wealth Games are to be held.
Aside from far flung destinations, many of the travel picks are within easy reach, including the caves of Quang Binh in Vietnam, Siem Reap in Cambodia that’s best known for Angkor Wat, the ever-growing tourism destination Taiwan, and Krabi in Thailand, noted for its adventure sports, island hopping and recent surge in tourism.
Yogyakarta in Indonesia was also given a mention, which comes just a short time after the recent introduction of regional airline Silkair‘s new flights to the cultural hub. Read more on the new flight route here.
Over in Japan, two destinations that made it to the list are the snowy slopes of hotspring town Nozawa Onsen in Nagano prefecture, in contrast to one of the nation’s most southerly island’s Ishigaki.
