Tibetan luxe: Shangri-La Lhasa set to open in April

Situated in the city of Lhasa, the plush new hotel Shangri-La Lhasa will open on April 17, offering a luxury base for adventurous travelers.

From 3,650 meters above sea level, the city is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains, glaciers and desert-like landscape, but in addition to the surrounding landscape, the city is also a Buddhist center with World Heritage sites.

The hotel itself combines traditional Tibetan architecture with the interior’s contemporary, yet Tibetan inspired, design, such as the lounge’s 6.5 meter bell-like chandelier that’s draped in red fabric.

To help guests acclimatize, the hotel has an oxygen lounge, while other facilities include an indoor pool, spa and gym.

When it comes to dining, you can choose between Shambala, a Tibetan-style tapas bar and lounge, Altitude for all-day international fare and Shang Palace for Cantonese and Sichuan cuisine.

Room rates vary depending on the season, starting at RMB 2,300 ($481) from April to June, RMB 3,300 ($690) from July to October and RMB 2,300 ($481) from November to March.
