Upcoming indie star Khalid just announced he’ll be dropping by Singapore, but if you’re up for a little adventure and want more bang for your buck, consider Urbanscapes: KL’s longest running creative arts festival, happening from Nov 3-18 at multiple city locations from Medan Pasar to Petaling street.
Back for its 16th year, the festival spanning three weekends will feature a good mix of music, visual and performing arts acts including, of course, a performance by Khalid. As part of U Mobile’s Unlimited Grooves Festival, the lineup for this year consists of international artists featuring Se So Neon, Wolf Alice, and Phum Viphurit, among others. If you enjoy dream-pop, pop-rock, blues and all-round Laneway Festival vibes, you’ll find it here. Promising Malaysian band Midnight Fusic will also be dishing out some 1975-esque songs with their alternative indie hits, while Bodega will push the art-rock genre with their heavy use of spoken singing in their tracks.
Inside the five-storey Urbanscapes House, enjoy various audio-visual experiences, along with outdoor interactive installations by local students. Paint the Light by Cervello merges projection mapping with immersive digital art to provide festival-goers with a chance to remix their own culture across different generations, using an old building as their canvas. Other art exhibitions by #REIMAGINEUS and Bono Stellar (in her largest installation yet) will also be on display.
In line with the festival’s theme #REIMAGINEKL, thought-provoking performance art will also be featured. Dancing In Place, a site-specific dance piece curated by Bilqis Hijjas, aims to engage with the rich heritage of Chinatown, and poses questions about what the space represents: preservation of history, freedom, a refuge; or all of the above? It’s food for thought to munch on, as you roam the rest of the festival, which will also spotlight Warung Panggung, a puppet show by Malaysian Puppetry Association.
