The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, unveils L’Observatoire, a stunning new sleeper carriage designed by renowned French artist JR. Debuting in March 2025, this carriage marks the first collaboration between the luxury train and an artist, blending JR’s artistic vision with the train’s iconic Art Deco heritage.
Inspired by astronomical observatories and Renaissance Europe’s cabinets of curiosity, L’Observatoire features unique interior designs, including marquetry created in collaboration with Atelier Philippe Allemand and meticulously curated objets d’art and keepsakes to be uncovered throughout this “studio on wheels”.
The carriage’s spaces are filled with expressive spaces and hidden touchpoints, including a bedroom with a free-standing bathtub, a lounge, library, and a hidden Tea Room. Oculi skylights, inspired by camera lenses, allow guests to gaze at the stars, while green leather scalloping and stained-glass art evoke an arboreal feel. The bathtub area is adorned with custom leaf patterns, and Michael Mayer’s stained glass brings surrealist landscapes to life.
With flexible lounge arrangements, a cocoon-like daybed, and a secret Tea Room featuring miniature train installations, L’Observatoire combines luxury and artistic wonder, turning travel into an intimate journey through JR’s creative world.
