5 self-care tips for better mental health, every day

May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States where the objective is to educate the public and address issues surrounding mental health and well-being.

But the truth is, mental health and self-care should be a priority all year round. While the month reminds us to take a step back and reflect on what we can do to support our own well-being and that of those around us, we should be aware that maintaining our mental health is an everyday affair.

This is something that Amanda Moo, founder of holistic wellness brand Soul Good Project, is passionate about. Moo, whose company creates personal care and skincare products using natural ingredients in Singapore, believes that practising self-care and prioritising your mental health isn’t selfish or indulgent but a way to manage stress and build resilience.

Here are her top five ways to incorporate into self-care strategies your daily routine and take charge of your life.

  1. Practice gratitude.

“Each day, take a few moments to reflect on what you’re grateful for. This could be something as simple as being thankful for the food on your plate, appreciating the work you do, or feeling grateful for the love and support of your family. This simple practice can help shift your focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right.”

  1. Clear your mind and connect with yourself.

“Take a peaceful walk in nature, practice deep breathing to calm your mind, or create a serene atmosphere by lighting a candle and meditating. Find what works for you and make it a regular part of your self-care routine.”

  1. Practice self-compassion

“Be gentle and kind to yourself, especially when things get tough. Remember that you’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.”

  1. Set achievable goals.

“Setting small, achievable goals can help you build momentum and feel a sense of accomplishment. This can be as simple as making your bed each morning or taking a break from your phone for an hour.”

  1. Reach out to someone that matters. “Whether it’s a phone call, a text message, or a video chat, make an effort to stay in touch with someone that matters to you. Social support can be a powerful buffer against stress and anxiety.”

Soul Good Project’s products are specifically created to enhance one’s mood. Moo recommends the French Press, a coffee-scented candle where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee is able to promote relaxation and mental clarity as part of one’s morning self-care routine. “The warm, comforting scent can help create a cosy and calming atmosphere in your workspace or at home”, she says.

Remember, you’re not alone – we’re all in this together.”
