It’s no secret that some of the best old-school haunts in Kampong Gelam are steeped in history. After all, who can forget those eventful school trips that gave us kids the opportunity to explore the local landmarks and businesses within the neighbourhood?

Now, in an effort to further celebrate the heritage businesses residing in the precinct, the National Heritage Board (NHB) has collaborated with those very businesses to spotlight their rich experiences with the Street Corner Heritage Galleries initiative.
Launched for the very first time at Balestier last year, the NHB scheme saw a close partnership with owners of local shops boasting at least three decades of history. Likewise, the second installment of the Street Corner Heritage Galleries at Kampong Gelam has resulted in more mini museums located at various store premises, showcasing the history and heritage of local businesses and trades.
Much like the Balestier mini museums, these galleries feature historical documents, photographs and artefacts that tell some lesser-known stories.

Some of the most recognisable names along Arab Street that now have their very own displays include the famous tea stall Bhai Sarbat Singapore, clothing store Sin Hin Chuan Kee and perfume shop V.S.S. Varusai Mohamed & Sons.
But that’s not all. Besides the displays, the businesses will soon be a part of larger NHB programmes and initiatives, as the organisation is working with them for future events and programmes such as talks, tours and workshops.
Be sure to continue supporting these heritage stores with a visit to their mini museums; more Street Corner Heritage Galleries will be coming to neighbourhoods such as Chinatown and Geyland Serai so keep your eyes peeled for those too.
