As we wait patiently to hear about Singapore’s line-up for next year’s Laneway Festival (Anderson .Paak, come through!), it looks like we’re off to start the year right. Secret Sounds Asia, the same guys behind this year’s Two Door Cinema Club, The xx and Cigarettes After Sex gigs, will be bringing in American indie folk band Fleet Foxes to Singapore on Jan 14 next year at the Esplanade Theatre. This will be their first time performing here.
The band was formed by frontman and lead vocals Robin Pecknold and guitarist Skyler Skjelset in Seattle, Washington, out of a mutual love for Bob Dylan and Neil Young back in 2005. Since then, they grew a presence and a strong following on during their Myspace days, and eventually signed onto Warner’s subsidiary record label Sub Pop. Growing bigger than they had expected, they got in Christian Wargo and Josh Tillman and released their first full-length self-titled record in 2008, which received raving reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork Media and The Guardian, noting similarities to the Beach Boys and Animal Collective (how could we ever forget “White Winter Hymnal”?).
While the follow-up album, Helplessness Blues, saw a lot of drama (they lost about $60,000 from scrapping new material), it did earn a Grammy nod for Best Folk Album in 2012; but just a month before that, drummer Tillman decided to call it quits and went on a solo career as Father John Misty (he might be on the bill for Singapore’s leg of the upcoming Laneway Festival).
Now with a highly anticipated third record that just released last June—six years since their last—experience their artful blend of lyrical, musical and vocal prowess in its entirety when they’re here in January next year.
