If it ever came to be that there’s “nothing to do in Singapore”, let it be known that a new activity to see and experience the city has landed on our shores. Sideways is the world’s first vintage sidecar tour service, and operates here exclusively to showcase the sights and sounds of Singapore.
The service is British-born entrepreneur Simon Wong’s personal project, but has already received the support of the Singapore Tourism Board and vintage Vespa retailer Triquetra Sidecar Experiences. Zipping around in a compact Vespa means you can get up close and personal with local landmarks and shops, as opposed to simply seeing iconic tourist attractions from a distance away.
You can book yourself onto a 30-min, 60-min or half-day tour—and into the passenger seat of a vintage vespa sidecar, to see key historic areas in Singapore from a new point-of-view. The 30-min Kampong Glam route, for example, takes passengers through quick photo opps at Baghdad Street, Sultan Gate, as well as a teh tarik stop to refuel. The Vespa tour guides are licensed riders; lead rider Yusri Salim has more than 25 years of experience on scooters.
Sure it seems gimmicky—the service is no doubt targeted at tourists who want a more immersive, local experience of touring Singapore—but Sideways doesn’t discriminate in who it wants to share our scenic island with. Taking a little trip around Singapore town in a Vespa might well be the next fad.
