It seems the people have spoken—content is best appreciated bite-sized; and theater is no exception. Short, text-based performances make up the repertoire at Centre 42’s Late-Night Texting, which returns for a second year as part of the Singapore Night Festival this August.
If you missed out on last year’s performances, here’s how it works: The name Late-Night Texting is derived from the performances revolving around text—whether it’s watching fully rehearsed short plays, or paying for performance art, where, for a fee, “poetry factory workers” customize poems based on words provided by you, the audience. Run time and staging for all the acts are kept to a minimum; the plays are largely capped at 10 minutes tops.
This year, Centre 42 has doubled their line-up, presenting over 30 performances from seven groups that will span both nights (Aug 25-26). We’ve already got our eye on a few new acts, like Text With Me, where improv comedians The Latecomers turn audience members’ suggestions into jokes right there and then; and ETA: 9 MIN, nine 9-minute plays presented by playwright collective Main Tulis Group. You’re bound to be up all night—in a good way.
