There’s a new eco-friendly and minimalist chic guesthouse in the Maldives, and the packages are a steal. Plumeria boutique guesthouse is located on the small, relatively untouched atoll of Vaavu, which has a registered population of only 500, and is surrounded by sandy beaches and lush barrier reefs ideal for fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
The four-star boutique guesthouse isn’t high-luxury, but has 21 (basic, but pretty) rooms, a nice pool and a restaurant serving Western, Asian and local cuisines for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s also an on-site PADI-certified diving school.
Judging from the few reviews that have been posted on TripAdvisor so far, it seems like people who appreciate being close to “Maldivian life”, rather than being locked up in a luxury resort, will really like the place.
Best part? Packages start at a sweet $109 a night. And what do they include? Lots. Rooms, all three meals and speedboat transfers (hour and a half each way) to and from the airport—the latter being a big draw, considering the public ferry takes six hours. That said, almost all resorts get more expensive during peak season between December and April, so go sooner if you can.
Singapore Airlines and Tigerair fly direct to Male almost everyday. Ferries and speedboats aside, there’s also the option to get to Vaavu by seaplane (20 minutes).
