This year’s Ramadan event in Kampong Gelam, happening from Mar 2 to Apr 5, is set to be bigger and better. Themed “Gemilang Kampong Gelam”, get ready to celebrate the rich heritage of the iconic cultural district with a host of events, special collaborations, food, shopping and artiste performances.
The Ramadan bazaar will be the largest and longest-running edition yet. beginning a week before Muslim fasting month commences and featuring over 107 local F&B and retail partners with their curated array of food and shopping selections for Hari Raya.
In line with the event is the mass iftar (the fast-breaking meal eaten by Muslims during Ramadan at sunset) taking place on Mar 23 at 7pm. Held in partnership with Eventify, Sultan Mosque, Travel Connect and Vision21, it is expected to set to record the largest mass iftar event in Kampong Gelam, with a projected 1,500 attendees. Tables will be open for sale to the public, with part of the proceeds channelled to Sultan Mosque and beneficiary groups.
On Mar 17 and 23, in partnership with Chiongster Motorsport, over 200 bikers will ride from Ford Road to Kampong Gelam. Printed merchandise will be sold to bikers, and proceeds will be directed to official beneficiary partners.
Visitors can discover lesser-known stories of Kampong Gelam through the Three Arch Design art exhibition at the Sultan Gate Park. The narrative extends to a web series Heritage Chronicles featuring compelling stories and cinematography, which audiences can access simply by scanning the dedicated QR codes on the arches with a mobile device.
A light show in conjunction with Sultan Mosque’s bicentennial commemoration will spotlight stories that defined the mosque for the past 200 years since the 1800s. Light projections of archival images will take place every Friday to Sunday from 7.30pm.
Stay for artist performances by Tomok (Malaysia), Alif Satar (Malaysia), Dadali, Taufik Batisah, Don Jany, pilgrimage talk shows, and live cooking shows at the bazaar. Live podcasts hosted by Sujimy Muhammad on Diari Ayah will also feature Singaporean artists and untold heritage stories of the Malay community. There will also be open air screening of local documentaries and web-series every night between 5.30pm to 10.00pm at Sultan Gate Park.
