Waves of Renewal

Sentosa may be an island of fun with sunny beaches, theme parks, outdoor trails and exciting activities, but under the surface are efforts often unseen by visitors to make the destination more sustainable and eco-friendly.

Well, they are no longer unseen, because Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has unveiled RISE, a new showcase designed to educate and engage visitors on island sustainability efforts through interactive exhibits. It is located at the Sentosa Beach Station from now till December 2024.

RISE, which stands for “Rallying Island Sustainability Efforts”, strives to ignite public consciousness towards environmental stewardship through examples of how the island businesses have transformed its operations by working together to lower its environmental footprint.

A series of interactive exhibits, art installations, and an upcycling workshop highlights key initiatives implemented over the past three years such as solarisation, recycling, electric vehicle adoption, farm-to-table practices, waste management and marine habitat conservation.

Each installation and exhibit has been created in collaboration with members of Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network (an alliance of island businesses including integrated resorts, hotels, attractions and dining establishments that work towards a common goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030) and partners like sustainability advocate Woo Qiyun and miniature artists Celeste and Anthony Ong.

miniTrashLab upcycling workshop

Sign up for miniTrashLab, an upcycling workshop ($59.90 per person) where guests can learn about the process of upcycling while experiencing a hands-on customization of their own upcycled sunglasses from plastic waste sourced from the island, including decommissioned Luge carts from Skyline Luge Singapore and kayaks from Lazarus Sea Sports Centre.

See exhibitions such as Droplets of Change and Waves of Renewal. The former visualises escalating environmental threats and Sentosa’s proactive efforts to counter them, while the latter displays Sentosa’s waste management strategies.
