Every few years, an organizer remembers the ingenuity of holding a festival within the grounds of Haw Par Villa. Come Oct 28, the 1937-opened theme park will play host to the inaugural Noise Invasion Festival, jointly organized by Noise Singapore and Invasion Singapore, and aptly themed #GetWeird. The festival aims to celebrate uniqueness and positive eccentricity, through a creatively designed trail of immersive and experimental art forms. No better place to get weird than among statues of Chinese mythological creatures and the Ten Courts of Hell; here’s what you can be a part of.
Dress your freakiest for a shot at prizes
In a group of four or more, come dressed in your most outrageous and creative costumes—and you might just walk away with attractive prizes. You can even get complimentary face and glitter painting on the day of the festival as the cherry on top of your outlandish outfit. Self-expression is obviously key here.
Catch the best of local musical acts
By now, the Joanna Dong hysteria over the weekend should prove enough reason to support our island’s musical acts—local musicians Sam Rui, M1LDL1FE (formerly known as Take Two), Axel Brizzy and more will take the stage at the one-day event to provide the requisite entertainment.
Bear witness to exotic turtle dances
Alright, we were deliberately vague with this one. You might not see said turtle dance, but you will see contemporary dancers grooving to experimental music in the actual terrapin kingdom within the park.
Paint on a life-sized mural even if you’re not artistically inclined
Three urban art enthusiasts (ie. possibly you) will be collaborating with established street artists Slac Satu and Freaky Fir, on a life-sized mural titled the Great Wall of Art. For the chance to be one of the three, upload a quick sketch or illustration inspired by the theme “Get Weird” onto Instagram, tag @NoiseInvasionFest and #NoiseGetsWeird, and pray that your interpretation of weird aligns with theirs.
Spend your dollars on quirky souvenirs and food
What’s a festival without an art market and a food street? Keep your eye out for unique fashion, arts and lifestyle goods designed and crafted by fellow Singaporeans; if all the weirdness works up an appetite, the food street with “peculiar arrangements of everyday Singaporean cuisine” should do the trick.
