The week in fitness and wellness (January 13-19): 24-hour gyms, novelty runs and more in the sporting calendar

24/7 gyms

Enjoy working out around the clock? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that US-based chain Anytime Fitness is opening another 24/7 outlet at MacPherson Community Club at the end of this month. The chain opened its first 24-hour gym here last October at Woodlands’s ACE The Place Community Club, and has ambitions to open a grand total of 100 gyms in Singapore by 2019. So if you ever feel the urge to pump some weights at 3am, you now know where to head to.

Be electric

Novelty running events—think zombies and colorful paint—are all the rage right now. So, it’s fitting that the first-ever edition of the non-competitive Electric Run is set to take place on April 11 and 12. The night race consists of a 5km route, taking participants through different “lands” that all have their own unique lighting and music. Expect tunnels of light, glowing arches and columns, psychedelic rock cliffs, neon trees and colored fountains—it’ll be an illuminating experience for sure. Registration opens on January 23 at www.electricrun.sg; the early bird fee starts at $68.

Other upcoming running events

The sporting calendar is packed right now, with running events almost every weekend. Registration for MediaCorp’s inaugural Hong Bao Run 2014 (February 9) is still open. Register ($68) on the website and you might end up walking away with $88,888 in cash. There are also still slots available for the Marina Run, taking place on February 15, so do sign up ($48-$58) on their website too. The annual Terry Fox Run will be held the day after the Marina Run. If you’re looking to run for a good cause, sign up here before it’s too late—there are no registration fees, only donations.
