The barbershop renaissance is in full swing: two new spiffy grooming parlors open

It wasn’t so long ago that shady neighborhood barbershops and unisex salons smelling of peroxide and perfume were the only options for men who need a chop—but who knows what might happen when you’re in there. These days, getting a spiffy pompadour or some period haircut is easy, especially with two new hipster-type barbershops joining our list of old-school-cool hipster barbershops

Just opened along Amoy Street is Jermyn Street, a fancy six-chaired grooming parlor helmed by master barber Luke Strickland from London. Services include the standard hot towel shave, haircut and shampoo, plus the not-so-standard mani-pedi, eyebrow grooming and waxing. The barbershop, which also has a stage for live acts, a private room for meetings and a bar, uses and retails products from D.R. Harris, alongside the sale of goods from brands like Mr Natty, Layrite and The Daimon Barber.

Earlier last month, Farrer Park welcomed The Golden Rule Barber Co, also a multi-concept barbershop in the likes of Hounds of the Baskervilles and The Panic Room (no surprise, though—founders Yanto Aryan Sani and Mohamed Jay Anudin were pioneer groomers from the two establishments). The handsome space has all the oligatory industrial touches (metal toolboxes, Chesterfield sofa and vintage lightings), with a musical slant: pictures of bands from the ninties and electric guitars grace the walls, and there are merchanise from local bands and the occasional acoustic sets.
