Few may recall that last Oct, a revolutionary fashion and art festival was held in the unassuming space of a supermarket. Against the linoleum tiles and cement floors of BigBox HyperMart in Jurong East, the inaugural Outsider Fashion Art Festival made a statement refuting the exclusivity of fashion, and a good 1,500 or so attended in support.
The festival returns this Apr 4-7, to once again demonstrate that art and fashion can be made accessible to the public without becoming unappealingly mass. Look forward once again to innovative art, exhibitions and fashion installations that celebrate design, fashion and art. And while the location of a supermarket was novel, Outsider 2018 will take over indie cinema The Projector instead.
Like last year, this year’s edition will feature 20 fashion designers and artists from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and the UK—who will showcase their latest collections at the festival. Homegrown labels repping local include Abstracxion, Ametsubi and Playhood. The inaugural event also saw works from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) fashion graduates, although it hasn’t been confirmed if they too will return.
