Happy birthday Singapore!

It's August, and every year, 'tis the month when all Singaporeans swell with national pride, especially come August 9th. In celebration of our nation's 55th birthday, locally-fueled events and menus are sprouting up all across town. Here, we picked a handful of truly local eats and drinks that are sure to pique your interest.

Auntie Anne's

The household name in freshly-made pretzels is offering yet another local twist on their offerings with their limited-time special, the Heart-Shaped Coconut Pretzel with Gula Melaka Dip. Expect fragrant coconut notes whiffing from each soft pretzel, best paired with the gula melaka dip for a sweet and piquant finish. Usually $4.60, get a 55% discount (so it's $2.07) with any purchase. Available till Aug 31.

Da Paolo Group

Everyone's go-to Italian diner is offering a few local spinoffs, but what caught our eye is their Singapu-Rosa Cocktail ($20). There's hibiscus tea in there, hints of kaffir, and traces of Garam Masala, resulting in a unique blend of Singaporean flavours. Or try their Chilli Crab Pizza ($33) for a spicy Singapore-meets-Italy treat. Available till Aug 31.

The tucked-away oriental restaurant on the second level of The Riverhouse is offering an interesting, healthier spin on a perennial local favourite with their Hainanese Black Chicken Rice ($17). It's made using chewy Arborio rice cooked in squid ink, then paired with juicy, healthy black chicken meat and homemade chilli. Try it anytime as it's now part of their new menu.

Oriole Coffee + Bar

Chilli crab lovers, you're in luck. There's not one, not two, but five new chilli crab dishes available at Oriole. There's a Chilli Crab Pizza ($32), Chilli Crab Linguini ($30), Crispy Wings with Chilli Crab Dip ($24), Chilli Crab Mac & Cheese ($29), and a Waffle Fries with Chilli Crab Dip ($19), all made using Jumbo's winning chilli crab sauce and generous chunks of real crab meat. Now part of their new menu.

Spago by Wolfgang Puck

The sky-high celeb chef restaurant is offering an exclusive four-course dinner for just $55 this National Day month. Start with an elevated kaya toast made using foie gras, before moving on to a handmade sweet corn agnolotti, a Japanese sea bream "laksa", and finishing off with a fluffy salted caramel souffle paired with a refreshing Fuji apple sorbet.
