CHAT: Peaches

Remember last year when Peaches aka Merrill Beth Nisker stepped on Zirca and completely disintegrated the joint with an unadulterated live set filled with tits wagging, lazer blasters and audacious costumes? Now, the controversial Canadian born-German based musician is back and this time behind the decks at Home Club. I had a quick chat with about her recent musical, Christina Aguilera and who she really is.
Congratulations on your win for “Electronic Artist of the Year 2010” at The Independent Music Awards.
It was a people’s choice award so that shows that even the people have spoken!
It has been 10 years since your much acclaimed and rather controversial album, The Teaches of Peaches. How have Peaches evolved personally and artistically since then?
Just expansion. Better crafted songs, more rapping, more singing and more antics And it was that very album that inspired the musical Peaches Does Herself which ended last month. I did Peaches Christ Superstar which was me performing the whole 1970s rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. That inspired me to make my own rock opera based around 24 of my own songs and to celebrate 10 years of music making. The electro rock opera I composed, directed and starred in was called Peaches Does Herself.

By the way, how was 2010 for you?
Well, putting on my own electro rock opera was quite a highlight for me as well as the full laser show that I performed with my band where we played all my songs on lasers
You are an eccentric artist whose exaggerated showcases borders on emotional extravagance, but who is the real Peaches underneath all that?
It’s all laid out for you. No secrets really
You collaborated with Christina Aguilera on the track “My Girls”. How was that like?
It was cool. She came to my show and then asked me to rap on her track and I did and she liked it.
And you also worked with the likes of Digitalism and Simian Mobile Disco. Do you have a certain set of artistic expectation in order for you agree to work with an artist?
I also worked with Soul Wax/2 many DJs. There are always expectations but basically you just have to work and see what comes up.

A Peaches album in the works perhaps?
I will start to work on my 5th album in February.
We can’t wait to see you back in Singapore and this time for a DJ set. What can we expect?
Some good hard dance tracks that will make you go nuts!
