MUSIC: djB’s Oniwaye

Local house hero djB sent over an interesting ‘lil package in my inbox in the form of his new EP. Collaborating with Danny Marquez, Oniwaye has already been plugged by the likes of Martin Solveig and Roger Sanchez in their sets.
“Muzilk”, the first track off the three-track EP is a bouncy of a tune with an infectious hook and some judicious filtering beyond just the snare before a looped vocal snippet (whispering ‘muzilk’) comes in during the breakdown. Possibly the highlight of the track comes in after when the big bass sounds comes crashing in. Second tune “Oniwaye” is a classic peak-time number, blending tight house beats with catchy refrains and looped vocals.
“Basically, we wanted to do something that was housey enough for the house DJs and techy enough for the techno ones to play as well. So came these two track “Oniwaye” and “Muzilk”.  “Oniwaye” is a bit more housey with a 909 kind of high-hats and jacking drums with a chanting vocal ontop, while “Muzilk” has that big room sound yet retaining a minimal aesthetic at the same time,” explains djB of the EP.
“I sent a demo to Simon Dunmore (Defected) and he really liked Oniwaye but because it is not so “soulful” or “Defected” sounding, he decided to put it under the Azuli label,” he adds.
Oniwaye will be released in January 2011, and will be available on itunes, Beatport, Juno, Traxsource and all good records stores.
