It’s official. Tiong Bahru is now the most happening part of town. With 40 Hands having led the charge, Books Actually following suit, and Strangelets opening soon at number 7, Yong Siak Street is fast becoming the des res for all things cool and indie. (Shame about those new HDB towers going up right behind it.) Good news is that the F&B scene is being shaken up too (though we already love the fishball noodles right around the corner at Hua Bee Restaurant (#01-19, 78 Moh Guan Terrace)). Rumor has it that the guys behind 40 Hands will be contributing to a new wine and coffee spot. That’s slated for an August opening at 19 Yong Siak, in a space currently occupied by a Christian bookshop.
Down the road meanwhile, there’s talk of an ice cream and alcohol joint (licence issues permitting) in a glass-fronted space at #01-10, Blk. 68 Seng Poh Lane (in the carpark between Por Kee and De Golden Spoon). At a flea market there over the weekend, the owners said they’re hopeful that they’ll have something up and running very soon. It’s a sweet place, all natural light and with the opportunity to spill out into the car park on a balmy evening. Watch this space and, in the meantime, go snap up a unit in TB before the rent goes stratospheric…
