Located at the much talked about New Majestic Hotel, this modern restaurant serves a precious selection of Chinese cuisine alongside the art deco pieces that grace its walls. The various antique chairs (which deck the white-washed lobby) from the private collection of owner Loh Lik Ping indicate that this is no ordinary restaurant (or hotel, for that matter). What sets Majestic apart is hype, with popular Chef Yong, previously from Doc Cheng’s and Hai Tien Lo, hailing as sous chef. The restaurant’s interior décor comes replete with a miniature chandelier and other odd art objects which you will either love or hate. While the selection may not be as extensive as at other establishments we’ve been to, the food here has been carefully prepared, and is usually consistent and reliable. The starters, the crab meat soup with fish maw and mushroom, and hot and sour soup; which come piping hot straight from the kitchen, are delectable openers to an overall satisfying meal. The wok-fried Japanese hand-pulled noodles is a yummy dish and other dishes such as the crispy chicken marinated with wasabi and distillers grain sauce and braised tofu with garlic are welcome additions to any meal. The latter, especially, is a delight, as the homemade tofu’s texture is oh-so-soft and ultra slithery—one of the best we’ve had. Certainly one of the hippest and more exciting Chinese restaurants in town.
