A social impact hub with co-working spaces, a social enterprise cafe and more
Dubbed a cradle for social impact by its developers, Temasek Shophouse occupies the refurbished heritage shophouse space at 28 Orchard Road, next to the MacDonald House. It holds a great promise—to be a spot where policy makers and agents of change can gather, host and conduct social and environmental initiatives.
Behind the Shophouse is philanthropic trio Temasek Trust, Temasek Foundation and Stewardship Asia Centre, along with a series of co-working partners, including ABC World Asia and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Revamped over the course of 18 months, Temasek Shophouse’s indoors attained much changes, but had its historical facade preserved. A featured Green wall was even erected for its air-cleaning, dust reduction and sound abatement qualities. Now, the landmark is an incredibly inclusive, three-storey building with a biophilic design. Not only is the structure wheel-chair accessible, it also includes Braille on signages, and has a prayer room and nursing room for those who might require them.
Taking a predominant space on the building’s first level is Foreword Coffee, a social enterprise coffee company and cafe which hires differently-abled persons. The level one and its mezzanine is also occupied by co-working spaces, meeting rooms and a gallery. Exhibitions relating to social and environmental causes are to be held on this level too. Its first showcase saw the re-creation of a typical convenience store, aptly named The [Not-So] Convenience Store, which sought to educate visitors about pernicious everyday products and its eco-friendly counterparts.
The co-working spaces are mainly found on the second floor, with the prayer room and nursing room tucked away in a discreet corner. A larger meeting room lies on the third and rooftop level, along with a quaint outdoor garden, in addition to the one on the ground floor.
Temasek Shophouse will see an array of significant projects; keep up with its revolving door of exhibitions or get in touch with the team for co-working opportunities through their website.
