Kumar is celebrating his 50th birthday with a jubilee drag show that’s pure gold

International drag queens Kim Chi and Naomi Smalls may be gracing our shores next year, but Singapore’s very own drag superstar has something fabulous in store for us all too.

Far from a mid-life crisis, the OG comedian turns 50 next year and is rightly celebrating with a brand new birthday show Kumar50. Reuniting with Dream Academy Productions, he’ll take the stage at Capitol Theatre and look back on five decades of growth (physical, mental and spiritual) as fodder for the entertainment—everything from growing up, his days as a singing waiter, and wisdom gained through his epic journey in showbiz.

Expect fresh material and a humorous retrospective in this extravagant one-(wo)man show, directed by the effervescent Selena Tan and written principally by Benjamin “Mr Miyagi” Lee. And like any good drag show, there’ll be rounds of fierce lip-syncing; Kumar and his Boom-Boom Room showgirls will take on everything from Whitney Houston to Taylor Swift.

It’s always humbling when a local cultural icon hits the golden age of 50, and Kumar remains ever relevant, hilarious and important to Singaporeans, ever since his days cutting his teeth at the now defunct cabaret club The Boom-Boom Room, doing provocative stand-up and drag. A limited 13 shows will run from Feb 28-Mar 11, 2018, and you can get tickets from $50 here. If you needed to be told the obvious, Kween Kumar only turns 50 once.
