8 markets in May to put on your “may-be” list

The month of May comes bearing a smattering of public holidays and observances, giving you a little more reason to get out of your house on day-offs and weekends. Apart from your regular fairs and markets for your monthly fashion-and-produce-fixes, look forward to the return of the annual Geylang Serai Bazaar to commemorate Ramadan this month.

The Fair – Spring 2019 (May 3)

50 international vendors from over six countries gather to showcase a collection of quirky wares at Orchard Rendezvous Hotel this May. Browse dozens of stalls touting fashion apparels, home decor, skincare products, and services by boutique vendors you won’t find available in stores. Visitors joining in on the shopping splendour will also stand a chance to win hourly lucky draws—the longer you stay, the greater your chances.

Where: Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, 1 Tanglin Road

Bayfront Pop-up Market (May 3)

Shop for adorable little trinkets, including metal straw sets, stationery and snacks over at Gardens by the Bay. Always one to support local social services, the bazaar has partnered up with various social service organisations to raise funds for their beneficiaries at the pop-up.

Where: Gardens by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive

Ramadhan Bazaar 2019 (May 3-Jun 5)

Each year, the Hari Raya bazaar at Geylang Serai draws in huge crowds, made up of both Muslims observing Ramadan and non-Muslims who are just there for the feast. The bazaar is hosted pasar malam-style, with spreads of open-aired stalls hosting wide varieties of street food that range from the classic Ramly burger to refreshing Thai milk teas. In response to the rising concerns around overpriced Instagram food fads monopolising the bazaar in the previous years, Wisma Geylang Serai has taken measures to ensure that 60 percent of its stalls will be offering eats old-time bazaar-goers are familiar with—and for the first time in over 40 years, the bazaar will be 100% halal.

Where: Geylang Serai, Joo Chiat Complex

Katong Square Lifestyle & Vintage Market (May 10)

Whether you’re a vintage purveyor or a casual flea-goer, this market that runs every second weekend of the month is for you. You’ll be sure to find a horde of booths lining Katong Square, hawking all things vintage—haute couture, home decor, keepsakes, jewellery, vinyl records and more. Live DJ acts will be manning the decks as you grab deals left and right, keeping entertainment at a high throughout.

Where: Katong Square, 88 East Coast Road

PawRentsWeekend (May 11)

If you’re looking to spoil your four-legged children even further this month, there’s no better place than at City Square Mall’s PawRentsWeekend. Shop handmade accessories and treats for the furkids, and pick up a couple of locally designed goods to treat yourself as well. Snap a pic with your pet to enter the Petfie contest where attractive prizes await, or participate in obedience workshops to get tips on training your pet better. On-site grooming services are also available; or if you think you’re ready to expand your family, adopt a little one from the adoption drive at the event.

Frank Food (May 18)

Singapore’s favourite farmer’s market at Loewen Gardens falls just in time for Vesak Day this month, bringing the freshest local produce and bakes to the table for all. Come for the organic stuff, stay for lunch at Carrotsticks and Cravings, the al fresco cafe known for its pastries and coffees.

Dempsey Village Farmers Market @Siri House (May 18)

A couple minutes’ drive from Loewen Gardens, you’ll find the Dempsey Village Farmers Market also in full swing. The farmers market at Siri House offers more than just a curation of organic artisanal goodies; there are also various workshops, cookouts and cook-offs scattered throughout the market. Seeing that the Dempsey region will be abuzz this Vesak Day, you might as well make a day of it at the village.
