The circus is back in town! However, unlike Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza last year, which was held under its signature big top circus tent outside Sands Expo, Circus 1903 will be taking place at The Mastercard Theatre at Marina Bay Sands from Apr 18-29.
No matter; you’ll still be privy to the decadence, grandeur and romance typical of circus’ of yesteryears on stage. Brought to you by the same people behind The Illusionists, and the award-winning puppeteers of War Horse, the show hopes to bring you back to a time when the circus was a visual spectacle to catch death-defying high-wire acts, the bicycle wheel of death, knife-throwers, contortionists, stilt-walkers and so much more.
Another thing that used to be a big part of the golden age of circus are the animals. Simon Painter, creative producer for the show said that they decided to bring back elephants, as they’re the “classic, grandest, and most overwhelmingly amazing creatures” in a show like this. Of course, they’re not using actual animals. This is where the model makers of War Horse come in. They’ve created the “largest ever performing African elephants” to life, which take a total of four people to animate. During the show, the mother elephant will “teach” her baby to become a performer in the circus like her.
And what’s a circus without its Ringmaster? He’ll be there to break the fourth wall and entertain you in between acts with some magical routines and crude humor. If you’re lucky (or unlucky), you might even get invited into the ring to be part of the performance.
