There’s more to do than just visiting relatives and friends during Chinese New Year. At Wan Qing Festival of Spring 2021, look forward to an exciting line-up of family-friendly offerings as you welcome the Year of the Ox.
Held at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall from now till Feb 21, the festival is packed with activities for the whole family.
First, get one for the photobook at the memorial hall’s annual thematic installation, Double Prosperity. A collaboration between the memorial hall and artists Tan Yizi and Lee Hsieh-Lung of Blackbox (a design and collectible label), Double Prosperity is an outdoor installation featuring two large ‘Foo Dou’ Guardian Lions. It comprises one male guardian lion with its paw on an embroidered ball and one female guardian lion restraining a playful cub.
Then sign up for Festive Chinese Drums Workshop with the kids. This musical workshop will teach you and your child basic drumming techniques used for Chinese percussion instruments.
Meanwhile, the Children’s Lion Dance Workshop will get everyone into the festive spirit. Learn basic dance movements from expert instructors, have fun trying on miniature lion dance costumes, and discover the origins behind this well-loved artform.
There are also Zodiac Animal Coaster and Clay Painting workshops. Have fun designing your own zodiac coaster or clay figurine at these hands-on craft activities.
On Feb 20, embark on the Balestier Heritage Trail to uncover the rich history and origins of Balestier from as early as 1835. Delve into the architectural and cultural developments of Balestier as you visit heritage stops such as Loy Kee Chicken Rice and Lam Yeo Coffee Powder Factory, and discover the unknown stories behind these places.
Alternatively, join a free guided tour of the memorial hall and hear the stories behind this century-old villa that trace Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s revolutionary activities in Southeast Asia.
The memorial hall is also one of 32 participating museums and galleries where you can collect exclusive red packet designs. You just have to follow its Facebook page to receive your limited edition red packets.
