The Japan Rail Fair returns with virtual shochu workshops, nature tours and more

Singapore may be extending the Vaccinated Travel Lanes scheme to eight more countries, but what is arguably every Singaporean’s favourite holiday destination is still not on the list.

And so the upcoming Japan Rail Fair 2021 by Japan Rail Cafe may help satiate our wanderlust for just a little longer, with both free and ticketed programmes in the line-up.

Just check out highlights like the ticketed livestream activity Let’s Enjoy The Countryside by JR East Hachinohe Train Depot; led by lively train conductors and drivers across the Hachinohe countryside, this event will be complete with some specially-imported “Hassen” sake as part of the VIP Tour Package (available at $40 per pax).

There’s also A Train Conductor’s Life in Fukushima, where participants will share the driver’s seat with a JR East train conductor and receive a goody bag of memorabilia when they sign up for the $30 VIP Tour Package.

Those with a fondness for furkids can also join in a free Autumn Delights Party! by Akita Inu Tourism, which is essentially a nature tour of Northern Akita where grape- and apple-picking will take place, as four adorable Akita Inu dogs grace the orchards.

Otherwise, foodies can go on multi-stop tours to Yokohama, Odawara, Atsugi, and more, where introductions to various specialty eats will occur.

There’ll even be an engaging shochu workshop, to guide locals in discovering the wonders of shochu—from its history in Kagoshima to its brewing process and benefits.

As for those taking it down to Japan Rail Cafe to feast, just enjoy a scrumptious selection of ekiben (railway bento). Try some mouth-watering Teriyaki Chicken Wappameshi or go luxe with the Grilled Scallop Wappameshi.

The Japan Rail Fair 2021 happens from Oct 16-17 and Oct 23 virtually. More information available here.
