A massive crafts pop-up is taking over an old industrial block this month

It’s not often that one of Singapore’s most well-known craft purveyors (The General Co) and a legacy Scottish whisky distillery (Balvenie) decides to partner up, but it seems like this unlikely marriage has resulted in the birth of one of the most anticipated events coming up this year.

The Balvenie House of Craft, happening every weekend from Sep 7-30, is shaping up to be a gathering of the best kind: local craftsmen showcasing their skills at public workshops, talented chefs hosting supper club dinners, award-winning bartenders concocting beverages using Balvenie whisky, local artisans sharing about their works over community talks, inspiring indie short film screenings, and more.

The venue itself, a revitalized industrial block on 115 King George’s Ave (right beside adjoining The Refinery) is an apt choice, being in a neighborhood once the center of Singapore’s metalworking and woodworking industries. In fact, after the pop-up event ends, the ground level space will be converted into a woodworking lab managed by Roger&Sons.

You’ll want to plan ahead before heading over to the four-weekend celebration of the local crafts scene. For one, the supper club dinners ($98) and craft workshops ($75-$150) are ticketed events, while registering your interest in attending The Balvenie House of Craft will get you one free drink at the pop-up bar. While the bar will be open on all event days, Fridays from 8pm-11pm will see mixologists the likes of Peter Chua of Junior and Gabriel Martin Escoto Carlos of Manhattan taking guest shifts.

Feel free to just pop by for the free events and take in the vibes. The film screenings happen on Friday nights, while things like boro art and letterpress demonstrations take place on Saturdays. There are also community talks by woodworker Morgan Yeo (of aforementioned Roger&Sons) and marquage painter Cherin Sim, to name a few, as well as industrial installation works for your viewing pleasure.
