Cham – Masked Dances of Tibet

FESTIVAL
Esplanade’s A Tapestry of Sacred Music, which has been around since 2009, puts together a line-up of powerful musical expressions of sacred traditions, exposing us to the rich cultures beyond our borders. This year, the festival brings 24 different programmes, such as a music performance by UNESCO Artist for Peace Kudsi Erguner from Turkey; masked dances called cham performed by Tibetan monks; ceremonial music from West Africa featuring African drums and beats; the most unique music by acclaimed throat singers from Tuva; and activities such as guided meditation sessions and off-beat workshops. It’s going to be an enriching and enlightening festival, seeing as many of these art forms are typically seen only within places of worship, which are inaccessible outside of their community.
