Just when we thought the year couldn’t get any better in terms of live shows, Canadian Grammy nominee Shawn Mendes has announced he’ll be joining Singapore’s 2019 gig line-up. The 20-year-old singer-songwriter has come a long way since his Vine days, and will be making his way back to the Eastern hemisphere for his self-titled Asian tour, with a glorious pit stop in Singapore come Oct 4 at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Ever since the release of his debut single in 2015, teen-pop track “Stitches”, Mendes has been among the frontliners of international pop artists. The acoustic-handclap pop tune tells a heart-wrenching tale of an abused boy in a toxic relationship he struggles to break out of; for this he garnered a whooping 1.1 billion streams on YouTube. His second album, Illuminate, dished out several radio bangers such as “Mercy” and “Treat You Better”—both echoing the forlorn vibes of his debut album.
He’s since refined his boyish charm and brought a little sex appeal to the table with his latest album Shawn Mendes, though still keeping that acoustic appeal and family-friendly status he’s come to be known for. On the tour, expect to hear his newest hits like swoon-worthy number “Particular Taste”, with its subtle pop-rock vocal elements scattered throughout the track. The third album also features various prominent artistes that include the likes of John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels and Khalid—but no promises on who else will show up.
If you had previously missed your chance to see his sold-out gig at the Star Theatre back in 2017, consider this a forewarning to set your alarms for May 2 when tickets go live to the public (or Apr 25, if you’re a member of ShawnAccess). Go on, there’s nothing holdin’ you back.
General sales begin May 2 at 2pm at all SingPost outlets and online. More info here.
