See drones, fireworks and lights perform in unison at the second edition of Star Island

Last New Year’s Eve, the annual Marina Bay Singapore Countdown celebrations got an upgrade thanks to the very first Star Island, a synchronised performance of Japanese-designed fireworks, lights, music, pyrotechnics and many other high-tech elements, that all happened on The Float @ Marina Bay.

This year, the sold-out show returns with an even bigger shebang, adding a staggering 500 drones into the mix. Apparently, these flying machines will be performing in sync with all the other parts of the show, resulting in one epic display unlike any you’ve seen before.

There’s a theme this year too—A Space Odyssey. We’re not sure if it’s related to the film in any way, but we definitely know it’s gonna be out of this world. The show, which runs for over an hour, is split into six chapters: Ceremony, Another Earth, Galaxy Party, Gravity, Microcosmos, and the Grand Finale. Each is choreographed to a unique soundtrack in 3D surround sound technology, promising to envelop audiences in the ultimate audio-sensory experience. You even get a LED wristband that responds in unison with the show.

While it’s tempting to glue your eyes to the skies, know that it is but a visual canvas—albeit a highly spectacular one—to the world-class theatrical acts performed on stage below by Olympians and ex-members from famous circus troupes and dance companies. The show itself runs from around 10.40pm to 12.30pm, but make a day of it since doors open from 5pm for you to enjoy pre-show activities, the various F&B booths and live DJ performances.

You can choose to enjoy this one-a-year extravaganza in various ways. There are seven ticket categories—get a regular seat (from $88) or go luxe and book out a private suite (from $6,888 for six people) just for you and your crew. Or, you know, be among the throng jostling for a view of just the fireworks at the free-to-enter areas surrounding Marina Bay.

Star Island Singapore takes place Dec 31, 10.40-12.30pm at The Float @ Marina Bay. Doors open from 5pm for fringe activities.
