Gain a deeper appreciation for Woodlands at this year’s Arts In Your Neighbourhood

In line with how arts and culture shouldn’t be just pensive museum visits, this year’s Arts In Your Neighbourhood (AYN) by the National Arts Council returns for the 11th time in Nov 8-25, with an expansive suite of over 70 curated activities in 18 locations nationwide.

AYN is an initiative that brings local arts and performances to the fore while doing so in our heartlands. Previous seasons saw tucked-away neighbourhoods such as Tampines, Jurong and Yishun being spotlighted. This season’s focus falls on Woodlands; so more than half of all activities will be held there, although neighbourhoods from Pasir Panjang to Bedok will all see some AYN action. Expect interactive art experiences spanning across various forms like music, dance, theatre, visual installations and trails.

The highlight of this event are four special commissions that seeks to showcase everyday spaces differently. They include a theatrical puppetry performance featuring puppets made from recyclables; a walking trail featuring pop-up performances; a hands-on furniture upcycling session; as well as an exhibition of five curated public artworks by local and regional artists that subtly studies diaspora between Malaysia and Singapore. There’s also a striking series of four musical works taking place alongside a martial arts performance that will find fans among history buffs.
