From Mar 22 to 24, 2024, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay presents the first edition of Ballet by the Bay, a weekend of classical and neo-classical ballet.
It will take place annually as part of da:ns focus, the Esplanade’s year-round dance season comprising five themed weekends.
Considering the last presentation of a live international ballet production was in 2019, the event will no doubt be highly anticipated by ballet lovers in Singapore.
The main production, Melissa Hamilton’s International Ballet Stars Gala, is not to be missed. Taking place at Esplanade Theatre on March 23 and 24, it brings together eight ballet stars from the world’s top-tier ballet companies.
They are Melissa Hamilton, Ryoichi Hirano, Yasmine Naghdi, and Marceline Sambe from The Royal Ballet, Madoka Sugai and Alessandro Frola of Hamburg Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet’s Mackenzie Brown and Marti Fernandez Paixa. Performing with them will be Singapore Ballet dancers.
During that weekend, Singapore’s National Contemporary Ballet will make its Esplanade debut at the DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre with Impermanence, a work choreographed by Jeffrey Tan, its founder and former principal dancer of Singapore Dance Theatre. It will feature young dancers from Singapore and Thailand.
There will also be a free programme at the Concourse stage on the opening day of the weekend for all to enjoy.
Additionally, Melissa Hamilton will conduct a masterclass at the Esplanade Rehearsal Studio at 9am on Mar 24, followed by Yasmine Naghdi at 11am on the same day (conditions apply). The cost is $70 per session.
