Traditionally celebrated over four days, harvest festival Pongal marks the beginning of the auspicious Tamil month of Thai.
To celebrate the occasion, Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) invites everyone to Pongal Open House 2024. Immerse in the rich heritage of the festival with an exciting array of programmes on Jan 6, 7, 13 and 14.
This year’s Pongal Open House is themed The Sun, an ode to the star’s warmth and radiance, and of sunlight’s critical role in the cycles of nature and an abundant harvest.
Visitors can engage in a hands-on crafts activity and dance with the Harvest Dance & Storytelling session; explore Tamil culture’s agricultural roots on a retreat in nature at the Kranji Farm Tour; discover the intricate world of gilded paintings through an immersive Tanjore Art Workshop; and take part in a Pongal Cooking Demonstration by chef Annil Ravindran.
They can also go on a journey around Little India to learn how Pongal is celebrated in the precinct and the significance it holds with the Little India Trail (Celebrity Edition), which will be led by Instagram and TikTok influencer Darshen Kunaseharan and Mediacorp artist Sajin.
Other Pongal-themed programmes include live music and dance performances, craft activities, karagam-making workshops, traditional games, and more. Registration is required for selected programmes; sign up here.
Admission to IHC is free for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. For more information, visit indianheritage.org.sg or IHC’s Facebook and Instagram page. To learn more about Pongal, visit www.roots.gov.sg/en/ich-landing/ich/pongal.
