American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat broke boundaries and revolutionised contemporary art with thought-provoking themes of identity, race and social dynamics. Known for his raw, emotive style, his works continue to resonate across generations.
Art lovers are now offered an unprecedented look into his life, artistic evolution, and cultural impact with Behind the Canvas Series 1: Jean-Michel Basquiat, an immersive experience that runs from Dec 16, 2024, to Mar 5, 2025 at Marina Bay Sands. The exhibition is also part of the highly anticipated Singapore Art Week in January 2025.
This three-month long initiative, presented by Covenant ART and supported by the Basquiat Estate, will be the first of its kind focusing on Basquiat’s artistic journey, and aims to deepen appreciation for his creativity while fostering introspection and dialogue about the themes his art represents.
Visitors will embark on an immersive exploration through interactive installations, rare archival materials, and multisensory experiences, and discover the artist’s formative years, his inspirations, and the pivotal moments that defined his career.
Explore 154 original framed pages from Basquiat’s Unknown Notebook, showcasing the artist’s sketches rendered in ink, markers, paint and oil sticks – a first of its kind. Visitors can step into an exclusive recreation of his legendary creative space and create digital portraits of themselves in the style of Basquiat, taking home a piece of his brilliance home.
See a dynamic video installation with individual screens showcasing rare clips of the artist at work and in conversation. A wraparound screen brings his downtown Manhattan neighbourhood to life, offering a deeper look into his creative process, intellect, and unique perspective.
