Weddings can be raucous affairs. We all know of boisterous relatives, the yam sengs that seem to go on forever, and the lively (and/or awkward) conversations at the dinner table. Then there’s the bride and groom…

But what if the groom is a mystery? This sets the stage for Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT)’s Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding.

Taking place in an exclusively constructed pop-up restaurant at One Farrer Hotel, Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding – featuring Koh Chieng Mun as Por Por, Edward Choy, Bridget Fernandez, Ric Liu, Tiara Yap, and Chacko Vadaketh – is a theatre performance blending food and storytelling.

The Chan family is hosting a wedding celebration, but they aren’t happy about it. The bride is Por Por (Koh), their 70-year-old matriarch – and they don’t know who the groom is. She declares he will only be revealed at the wedding dinner.

Is this a classic Crimewatch love scam or can somebody honestly fall in love with this sweet old lady?

It’s up to Por Por’s righteous insurance agent son, Francis, his hapless civil servant wife, Rainy, and their precocious teen, Prudential, to save the family from possible disgrace… Unless her friends – restaurateur Ajeet, KTV king Adam and polymath helper Flordeliza – can keep Por Por’s plan on track.

And just like a real wedding, guests will enjoy a four-course meal (choose lunch or dinner) by co-owner of ADDA Singapore and award-winning chef Manjunath Mural throughout the experience.

Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding, which runs from Nov 8 to 26, promises love, life, great food, and friendships that will leave you in stitches.

SRT is no stranger to site specific theatre, being the presenter of Shakespeare in the Park and productions like Caught (2019) and C-O-N-T-A-C-T (2022). SRT was also the first producer of dinner theatre in Singapore with Ah Kong’s Birthday Party in 1998. Co-created by Singaporean icon and composer Dick Lee, it was the longest running local stage production over a course of six months.

Lee, whose previous works include Forbidden City – Portrait of an Empress and Fried Rice Paradise, is now back in the director’s seat.

According to Lee, Ah Kong’s Birthday Party was the first immersive production in Singapore to include food, and it was very successful and unique. “The combination of theatre and cuisine makes for a great night out, which I’m happy to revive with this brand-new show,” he says.

Find out whether this will be the wedding of the year – or not. What’s guaranteed is a night of hilarious fun.
