There’s still time to delve into the rich tapestry of Nan’an heritage. Whether you have family ties to the city in Fujian, China, or just want to learn more about the community, there is much to discover at the Singapore Hokkien Lam Ann Festival.
Happening now till Sep 22, this year’s festival offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Nan’an heritage. It celebrates four pillars: the historic Hong San See Temple, the flavourful Nan’an cuisine, vibrant Sheng Gong culture, and the enduring Nan’an spirit.
There are engaging workshops and activities designed for every member of the family;, from hands-on crafting to innovative technology. Activities include Tea Art, where visitors can discover the elegance and rituals of traditional tea ceremonies; Chinese Calligraphy; and Traditional Chinese Painting. Try your hand at the playful art of Finger Painting or Clay Sculpting, learn the delicate art of Paper Cutting, and capture your likeness in a fun Caricature Portrait session. Challenge yourself with Lantern Riddles, and delve deeper into the rich traditions of Nan’an culture through immersive AI and VR experiences that vividly bring history to life.
Another highlight is the chance to savour Nan’an cuisine. The festival features over 20 food stalls presenting more than 40 Hokkien signature dishes. Nan’an, historically known as “Wurong”, was a prominent provincial centre in Quanzhou during the Qing dynasty, known for its Minnan-style cuisine that blends various Chinese culinary traditions with distinctive local snacks.
Try Hutou Rice Vermicelli, a traditional dish paired with ingredients like mushrooms, pork slices and beansprouts, or Honglai Chicken Feet infused with Chinese herbs. Another beloved Fujian dish not to be missed is Shishan Lor Mee where golden noodles are paired with a variety of ingredients such as squid, mushrooms, dried oysters, shrimp and lean meat stew.
For fried rice enthusiasts, the Chinese Mustard Green Rice is a cherished Lam Ann dish, traditionally enjoyed on the second day of the second lunar month. It is believed to ward off skin diseases with its nutritious blend.
At the heart of the festival is the Hong San See Temple at Mohamed Sultan Road, a historic site that has received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation-Award of Excellence. Visitors have the chance to explore this beautifully preserved temple, learning about its historical importance and its role in the community’s spiritual life.
Singapore Hokkien Lam Ann Cultural Festival is at 30 Mohamed Sultan Road, Singapore 238974, and runs from now till Sep 22.
