The Singapore Chinese Film Festival has been around for nine editions now, and in its upcoming SCFF 2021, the festival will be bringing over 40 Chinese flicks to our shores.
Celebrating diverse stories from all across Asia, this year’s film festival will run from Apr 30-May 9 online and in theatres. Similar to last year’s format, SCFF 2021 will offer a mix of physical and virtual screenings, with partners such as Filmgarde Bugis+, Golden Village, and Asian Film Archive and Shaw KinoLounge (online programmes).
The film selection this year comprises a total of 45 films in four main segments such as Chinese Panorama, Documentary Vision, Chinese Shorts Showcase, Debut Classics: Generation 1960s.
Opening this year’s festival is Hand Rolled Cigarette, directed by first-time Hong Kong director Chan Kin-long. Making its Southeast Asian premiere at SCFF 2021, the crime drama tells the story of an unlikely comradeship between a retired British Chinese soldier (played by award-winning actor Gordon Lam Ka-tung) and a young Asian man after a fateful encounter at the infamous Chungking Mansions. With seven Golden Horse Awards 2020 nominations under its belt, this is not one thrill-seekers should miss.
Also get your tickets for Anima, the festival’s closing film about two brothers living in 1980s China where deforestation grows rampant. Filmed in the beautiful mountains of Inner Mongolia, the show is an opportunity for us all to contemplate our relationship with Mother Earth.
With more than 40 flicks showcased, plenty more highlights await. That includes The Way We Keep Dancing that delves into the lives of artists and creatives, as well as Memories to Choke on, Drinks to Wash Them Down which is as charming and witty as its title proclaims.
