Stop calling us I-S.
Twenty-two years; that’s how long we’ve been around, and so much has changed for us. One of the biggest moves we’ve made was to rebrand ourselves from I-S to SG back in 2015, and the other was the painful decision to discontinue our fortnightly free print issue in July last year. We’re riding rocky waters, people; titles like Today, Juice Singapore and NYLON Singapore have all ceased print operations as well, in what seems to be an unnervingly unfortunate industry trend. But change isn’t all bad, and it doesn’t mean we’ve completely said farewell.
We may have shifted our focus onto the digital realm, but we’ll still be producing a print issue once a year—like this one—as well as our annual guides such as SG Eats, Top Tables, SG Great Escapes and more.
As we shamelessly wish ourselves “Happy Birthday”, we thought about how we’ve grown up and evolved with Singapore, along with other notable brands we felt were sort of in the same shoes as us. Singapore has come a long way to become today’s gentrified powerhouse. How have homegrown brands grappled with constant change all these years?
In this issue, we get up close and personal with Singapore’s musical gem that keeps on giving, Swee Lee Music (p.10), who only until recently went into the digital sphere. We also take a brief look at Zouk Singapore (p.12) to see how they’re doing in their lofty new home in Clarke Quay, and their future plans of taking over the world. But most importantly, we’ve laid out a beautiful two-page timeline of all the important events in both Singapore and the magazine, just in case you need to do a little catching up (p.8-9).
