Last year, there was a medium-sized exodus of galleries from Gillman Barracks, and the arrival of drinky places like Nekkid and Red Baron, neither event boding well for the arts enclave as the definitive place for high-brow stuff. Not that that’s a bad thing. If the success of the recent Art Stage edition of Art After Dark is anything to go by, people want a place to hang out late, drink, see DJs and maybe pop into a gallery while they’re at it.
And now, with the arrival of the latest crop of tenants, it’s looking more and more that Gillman is just as much a place to hang, shop and eat ice cream. Local lifestyle and design store Supermama will be taking over Block 47 this July, a space formerly occupied by Japanese art gallery Tomio Koyama. And joining the five restaurants and bars at Gillman Barracks is ice cream parlor Creamier, which will opening end March at Block 5A in Lock Road.
It’s not all doom and gloom on the arts front, though. Contemporary Australian gallery Sullivan+Strumpf will be making its entrance there.
