Looks like 2016 will be the year for Singapore’s ethnic communities getting dedicated galleries and museums. First, we heard about the Armenian museum that’s in the works. Now, there’s plans for a free gallery that will showcase Hakka culture, fashion and the arts, financed by clan leaders.
The gallery will open at the Ying Fo Fui Kun building (which was built just a couple years after the arrival of Raffles) along Telok Ayer Street, next year and will house Hakka artifacts, old documents, photographs and more. Expect lavish tributes to famous Hakkas in Singaporean history, such as Tiger Balm founder Aw Boon Haw, and, of course, founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
