5 Singapore Stories You Might Have Missed This Weekend

1. The Rolling Stones announced a gig here in March. Despite the highest-ever price for concert tickets in Singapore, the show sold out almost immediately.

2. Chinese phone-maker Xiaomi revealed that its much anticipated expansion outside of China (and Taiwan) would be….Singapore, on February 21. The company has rebranded its popular Hongmi Android phone as Redmi.

3. Starbucks opened its 100th store in Singapore, in heritage building Fullerton Waterboat House. The coffee giant is collaborating with the Autism Resource Centre, with ARC clients forming at least one quarter of the new store’s staff. The store also boats Singapore’s first Starbucks Slow Bar Coffee Experience, with customers able to choose coffee press, pour over and Chemex techniques as well as the regular espresso.

4. Plenty of people’s plans for a romantic weekend away were ruined when some 46 flights out of Singapore were cancelled because of the eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Kelud. Normal service is slowly resuming, though Yogyakarta airport is not expected to reopen until at least tomorrow.

5. Keppel Club and Marina Bay Golf Club were the unlucky losers in the Government’s redevelopment plans. Their leases will not be renewed when they expire in 2021 and 2024 respectively.
