A couple’s guide to Voilah! 2018

Voilah! 2018 kicked off in late March, and Singapore’s favorite celebration of all things French is just hitting full stride. From exhibitions to concerts and film screenings to a unique art experience, Voilah! 2018 is the perfect opportunity for a date night. Here’s what you can look forward to; depending on what kind of couple you are.

For history buffs

If you’ve been dreaming about a trip to Siem Reap to see the wonders of Angkor, Voilah! 2018 offers the next best thing to a plane ticket. On until Jul 22 at the Asian Civilisations Museum, Angkor: Exploring Cambodia’s Sacred City—Masterpieces of the Musee national des arts asiatiques-Guimet will showcase ancient statues alongside French records from the time of Angkor’s rediscovery and restoration in the 19th century. The exhibition is a collaboration between ACM and the Guimet Museum in Paris.

For nature lovers

Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time, and for those concerned with the state of the environment, Michel Rawicki’s Touched by the Cold will hit home. A photography exhibition held at Gardens by the Bay’s Supertree Grove until May 6, Touched by the Cold highlights the fragility of the Arctic.

For geeks

Happening at the National Design Centre until May 5, In Mathieu Briand’s Laboratory Studio: The Making of A-droyx is a fascinating look into the creation of an android that straddles the line between art and cutting-edge technology. Follow the journey from design to modeling and assembly, and have your eyes opened to the possibilities of the near future.

For the musically inclined

The Belle Epoque period from the early 1870s to the mid-1910s was a golden age for culture. Roots by Bellepoque revisits this chapter of history—with an eye on the events that unfolded in Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia at that time—through the popular music of the era. An international cast of performers will take you on this journey at the Esplanade Recital Studio on Apr 27.

For cinephiles

Of course, one couldn’t talk about a celebration of French culture without discussing French cinema. The Voilah! 2018 film line-up includes the psychedelic sci-fi animated film Fantastic Planet (Apr 29, The Projector) and Games of Love and Chance (Apr 24, Alliance Francaise), about a group of North African and Southeast Asian students putting on the classic French comedy of the same name in the Parisian slums.
