From moving houses to meeting Jamus Lim, here’s what our friends and family are up to this NDP weekend

It may be difficult to be in the mood for celebration due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but it is also important to remember that unity as a nation is more vital than ever. This week, we asked our friends and family what they are up to this National Day weekend, and heartwarming yet honest entries were what we got. From moving homes to meeting a Member of Parliament (Jamus Lim, no less), here’s what locals are looking forward to.

Indulging in local eats

“I’m looking forward to the yearly tradition of a KFC home party with my loved ones while catching the National Day Parade on TV. Since it’s a long weekend, instead of heading out for local nosh like we always do, we may just order through foodpanda this year. Localicious food in the comfort of our own home; we are definitely up for some relaxing family bonding time.” Samantha Tng, 40s, Associate Business Director

Meeting MP Jamus Lim

“As I stay right beside the Sengkang General Hospital, the Red Lions are actually parachuting in and landing right beside my estate as a thank you to the healthcare workers, so I’ll get front-row seats to the action right from home. Our newly-appointed MP Jamus Lim is also visiting us on National Day for a meet-and-greet. Looks like I’ll get to enjoy all the action from the safety of my house.” Dannon Har, 33, Editor

Moving into a new place

“I’ll be shifting into my new home over the National Day weekend so I’m excited to watch the National Day Parade on my new plasma television!” Priscilla Lam, Learning & Development Specialist, 29

Netflixing local shows

“I recently found out that more than 100 Singaporean shows and movies are coming to Netflix, with some already available now. So I’ll definitely be Netflixing local flicks at my fiance’s home and getting to know my new family as well.” Stephanie Loh, 27, Architect

Organising a picnic

“To be very honest, I’m not particularly excited about this year’s National Day Parade and I think that’s largely due to the current global pandemic. Nonetheless, I’ll be going for a walk at the Singapore Botanic Garden with my partner and perhaps organising a picnic too.” Fariz Zulhilmi, 26, Musician

Scouring for fireworks hotspots

“I have a personal tradition of scouring for the best locations to view the annual NDP fireworks extravaganza, and this year will be no different. After an afternoon workout session, you can bet I’ll be off in search of spots to catch the pyrotechnics. I’ve even found online hotspots predictions offering viewing tips, so find me roaming around the Merlion Park and Waterfront Promenade.” Sharmaine Loh, 24, Writer

Sleeping in

“I’m pretty much a homebody, so besides sleeping in, I’ll be catching up on drama series’ that I haven’t had a chance to continue watching due to work. I’ll also be looking forward to having dinner with my parents! Nothing beats the home-cooked dishes whipped up by my mother.” Carmen, 28, Designer

Whipping up a feast with family

“This National Day, I hope to be able to spend time with my extended family. My mum will be cooking up a special feast which includes a wagyu beef steak bought by my dad. We will watch the NDP together while enjoying our family’s favourite dessert too—icy canned longan and rambutan, plus pineapple. It’s been such a long time since we’ve met up for a family gathering.” Michelle Leo, 40s, Business Manager
