Does a Nice Car Really Matter?
Can a luxury car help a guy attract women? First consider a few facts.
The latest COE (Certificate of Entitlement) bidding results are out, and all categories of cars recorded their highest prices in recent years. For a small car, you now have to pay almost $39,000 for that certificate. That’s on top of the price of the actual car, the registration fee, the extra registration fee (150% of the open market value of the car), the road tax, and the customs duty (31% of OMV).
Given this almost 300% mark up on a depreciating asset, you’d think all these bright lads would buy a sensible car or use their hard earned cash elsewhere. But a glance around Orchard Road, Raffles Place, or any hotspot in Singapore would quickly disabuse you of this notion, as bachelors vie for the loudest sports car, occasionally in screaming-new-money lime-green or bright orange.
Sometimes a car in Singapore can be a sensible purchase. If you have young children, for instance, driving your own car is a convenient way of ferrying everyone around. If you stay in the outskirts of town and aren’t close to a public transportation hub, then having your own car can give you much needed freedom.
But when it comes to luxury cars, many young men rationalize that 300% mark-up on a depreciating asset as a necessary means to an end—getting girls.
Sadly, you can’t take your car into the club with you. And while flashing your car keys in the bar may make you the envy of your drinking buddies, this method probably won’t bring the desired effect on the ladies.
Unless, of course, the gold-digger is what you’re looking for. After all, when you use money to attract women, you’ll get women attracted to money.
If you’re already the owner of an overpriced luxury car, I’m sure you hate me by now.
Just remember you only have yourself to blame when she dumps you for a richer man with a pricier car.
