Dear Mr KIA,
I think I’m approaching a mid-life crisis … right now my life revolves around the office, business meetings and even after work I have to sit through mind-numbing conversations about stock prices. I want to feel young again, and since I’m into R&B and hip hop, I’ve been inspired to pick up DJ-ing and mix my own tunes. Don’t really know where to start though. Could you recommend places I can learn the craft at?—Wannabe DJ
Dear Wannabe,
Well lucky for you, there are a couple of DJ schools that can set you on the right track (cheesy pun intended). E-TracX (411A Jalan Besar, 6224-4600, www.e-tracx.com) has a number of talented instructors including DJs KoFlow and Andrew Tang, and offers several services such as DJ workshops, Hip Hop and Turntablism. With full-length course and one-off workshop options, you can be a dilettante about it & not worry about committing. But if you find yourself wanting more after learning the ropes, get your own equipment from Hin Huat Enterprises Pte Ltd (#01-13/14 Sim Lim Square, 1 Rochor Canal Rd., 6296-9288). The store is a sizable showroom of all manner of DJ equipment, including that from Stanton and Technics. Now get scratching.
