Mr KIA Mar 18

What am I to do with my life? I just graduated and I’m stuck in a tiny cubicle eight hours a day, five times a week. I procrastinate by changing my make-up look every two hours or by giving makeovers to my colleagues. I’ve got two wedding makeup gigs lined up next month; apparently everyone thinks I’m a genius! I’ve also been churning out make-up tutorials on YouTube and currently have 43,561 subscribers! You could even say I am Singapore’s Marie Digby of cosmetics … well, one can dream. I want to go into this full-time, but I’m not sure which beauty school is credible and I don’t want to end up hired by bar top dancers. Can you recommend some schools?—Lip Service
Dear Lip Service,
Not keen on bar top dancers, huh? Don’t hate, appreciate! But if that ain’t your thing, you might consider going into make-up for a different stage—theater and the arts, maybe? If you fancy joining the stars behind the Youth Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies or the National Day Parade, get yourself over to Cosmoprof (#04-06 POMO 1 Selegie Rd., 6339-3325). These guys have been making up the NDP since 1991 and provide professional courses in theater and special effects makeup, body art and face painting. But if you’re bent on doing that bridal thing (personally, I’d rather work with a bloody zombie than a weepy bride), Jean Yip Academy (#01-01 Jean Yip Building 50 Kaki Bukit Place, 6841-7482) has a bridal make-up and hairstyling course and a diploma in professional makeup, which will hopefully catapult your YouTube career to celebrity status.
I’m not that old. Well, at least I don’t look that old. But a sure giveaway is reading books with outstretched arms. I’ve been in denial but I guess it’s time to face the fact that I need glasses. (In low light, I can’t even read a text on my iPhone!) Where can I get glasses that won’t make me look hopelessly old or old-fashioned?—Wide-eyed Wonder
Dear WEW,
Are you sure you don’t look that old? Perhaps your shortsightedness has led you to believe that you’re still young and beautiful. For luxe, borrowed vision, look to Optical 88 (#B1-32, 313@Somerset 313 Orchard Rd., 6834-4082), a reputable chain of stores stocking Chanel, Prada, Gucci and Dior among other big names. If you want to channel some douchebaggery, YES ! Your Eyewear Specialists (#01-075 Suntec City Mall 3 Temasek Boulevard, 6332-5332) houses glasses by Alain Mikli, who designs the shutter shades that Kanye West swears by.
