The Singapore Book Awards 2016 were handed out on May 11, rewarding some of the best Singapore-made books published between Jan 1, 2013, and Nov 1, 2015, across eight categories. Here are the highlights from the Best Fiction Title and Best Non-Fiction Title categories, and the winner of Book of the Year.
BOOK OF THE YEAR
Winner
The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew, Epigram Books
No Singaporean book has made more news in the last year than The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, from having its publishing grant withdrawn by the National Arts Council for its “sensitive content” to making the Amazon and New York Times bestseller lists. Sonny Liew’s graphic novel recounts the Singapore story in a remarkable new way and is a worthy Book of the Year.
